Shape guide. The table shape determines how the room reads and how conversation flows:

• Rectangular — the default Malaysian choice. Fits narrow dining rooms, pairs well with a bench on one side, and scales cleanly from 4-seater through to 8-seater without changing visual proportions.

• Round — best for smaller rooms and intimate dining. A 1,200mm round seats 4 comfortably, and a 1,350mm round seats 6. No head of the table means conversation flows evenly — ideal for family dinners and smaller hosted meals.

• Oval — a compromise between rectangular and round. Seats more than a round of equivalent width while softening the room's geometry. Good for transitional dining areas at the edge of an open-plan living room.

Seating-count guide. Plan 600mm of table edge per diner along the long side:

• 1,200mm — seats 4 (standard rectangular 4-seater)

• 1,600mm — seats 6 (the most common Malaysian household size)

• 1,800mm — seats 6 comfortably with room to breathe, or 8 at full capacity

• 2,000–2,200mm — seats 8 comfortably for regular hosted dining

Round tables: 900mm (4), 1,200mm (4 comfortable), 1,350mm (6), 1,500mm (6–8).

Material and finish guidance. The practical alternative is pairing a 1,600mm rectangular table with a dining bench: a bench seats two in the space of one chair, tucks fully underneath when not in use, and keeps the room uncluttered between gatherings.

Room-size planning. Leave 900mm of floor clearance behind every chair position so diners can stand and leave without disturbing anyone else. That means a 1,600 × 900mm 6-seater table needs a room at least 3,400 × 2,700mm to be comfortable. If the room is under 3m on its shorter dimension, step down to a 1,400mm rectangular or switch to a round table for better clearance. For open-plan living-dining layouts, the table doubles as a room divider — orient its long axis parallel to the living-dining transition so the sightline stays open.
